Needham and Norwood Together Score Brownie Points: Over $1,500 Raised For the Brown Family
February 6, 2010
Babson College Ice Rink
On Saturday night at the Needham vs. Norwood Boy's Ice Hockey Game, the host Rockets (15-1-1) defeated the Mustangs on the ice, winning 7-2, behind hat tricks from Senior Captain Sam Kane and Junior Tom Coleman. Off of the ice, the Needham HS Athletic Department, Boosters Club, and several parents of players on the team, came together and spearheaded an effort to raise money for the Brownie Points fund, which has been set up for injured Norwood player Matt Brown and his family. Needham brought their own custom made blue and yellow ribbon pins, and for any size donation they were distributed to contributors at the game. The night saw young children give what change they had, and some Needham and Norwood parents donate up to $100.00, for a single ribbon. When all of the money was added up, more than $1,500.00 was raised!
This show of support for the Brown family was truly a team effort that our community can be proud of!
Brown, a sophomore at Norwood High School, was recently seriously injured in a varsity ice hockey game. Matt broke his C4 and C5 neck bones, badly bruised his spinal cord, and is paralyzed from the chest down. He has undergone surgery and is facing a long and arduous rehabilitation process in an attempt to regain the use of his arms and legs.
A small ceremony was held before the game, and then at the conclusion, the Needham captains and coaches presented the Norwood captains and coaches with a check in the amount of $1,517.56 for the Brownie Points (see photo below).
Pictured from left to right are: Needham Asst. Coach Peter Brown (a close cousin of Matt Brown's father), Needham Head Coach Bill Guisti, Needham Asst. Coach Tom Shaughnessey, Norwood Head Coach Bill Clifford, Needham Captain Sam Kane, Norwood Captains Sean Keady & Brian Girard, Needham Captain Franz Brinkhaus.
Additional information on Matt Brown and further fundraising efforts on his behalf can be obtained by visiting http://MattBrownNumber3.org. This web site has been set up directly by the Brown family. The family has also established a fund at the Norwood Bank to help deal with the cost associated with his Matt's rehabilitation.
Donations can be sent to the following address:
Brownie Points
P.O. Box 398
Norwood, MA 02062
Checks should be made out to: Brownie Points.
Thank you.
